Positive COVID-19 Case at Tongass School of Arts and Sciences Annex

Positive COVID-19 Case at Tongass School of Arts and Sciences Annex

February 9, 2021

Exclamation Point (Ketchikan, Alaska) – Today we were notified that a member of the Tongass School of Arts & Sciences family tested positive for COVID-19. This individual self-isolated after being informed of being a close contact, was later tested and received a positive result. Contact tracing is now taking place by Public Health. We are working closely with the Ketchikan EOC and Public Health to respond, and are taking all needed precautions to protect the health of our community. This includes assisting with identifying potential close contacts.

Each situation calls for different protocols. Due to the nature of this case, we will take the following steps:

  1. Principal will notify school staff and parents.
  2. Tongass School’s Fairview Annex located at the First Assembly of God church will be closed immediately, and will remain closed for a minimum of 24 hours. This will take place Tuesday, February 9th through Wednesday, February 10th, with a plan to return to on-site operations on Thursday, February 11th. Any and all activities and before and after school programs at the annex location will be cancelled.
  3. Tongass School’s main facility will remain open and operational as normal.
  4. Ketchikan Pest Control will disinfect the annex location.
  5. Custodial workers will conduct a deep cleaning of the building.
  6. Updates to the public will go out as we receive updated information in collaboration with Public Health.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation while we prepare our school for re-opening. We strongly encourage the Ketchikan community to take all precautions seriously, to social distance, wash hands, and stay home if you are feeling ill. Our community is currently experiencing an increase in cases, and we must do everything possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our schools and community.
