Welcome to the 4th grade! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I am looking forward to a very happy and productive school year. This year we will have Ms. Baca, a student teacher from UAS, in our classroom regularly in the Fall and daily in the Spring.

In the 4th grade, we will be using a number of textbooks, programs, and resources to help us meet our learning objectives. Some of these include Envision Math, Core Knowledge History, The Write Tools writing program, Core Knowledge English Language Arts, and Alaska: A Land in Motion for Alaska Studies.

I’m very excited about the resources that we use. They are exciting, dynamic, and FUN! The Math encourages real mathmatical thinking, and the English Language Arts materials weave together elements from the Core Knowledge curriculum in the content areas of History, Geography, Science, and Classic Literature. They are also aligned closely with the state of Alaska’s new, more stringent Math, ELA, and Science requirements.

Some of the special classroom events planned for the year include a field trip to the Ketchikan Daily News, a Medieval Feast, and a visit to the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show!

Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement, so I hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, would like to schedule a classroom visit or a conference, or volunteer to help out, you can contact me at school, or email me at danielle.hewitt@k21schools.org

Once again, welcome to the 4th grade! Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
