Academic Decathlon (referred to as "AcDc" at Kayhi) is a multidisciplinary scholastic competition between teams of high school students competing in ten events:

    Art — Economics — Essay — Interview — Literature
Mathematics —  Music — Science — Social Science — Speech

There is also a SuperQuiz team event that combines questions from all the academic subjects. Groups of three decathletes answer the questions together quickly in a quiz-show format.

A full team has nine decathletes, three from each of the U.S. Academic Decathlon's grade categories—Honors (3.75-4.0 GPA), Scholastic (3.0-3.75) and Varsity (0.0-3.0). This ensures every school has a diverse team with varying levels of academic success.

The theme for the 2018-2019 season is the 1960s. The curriculum includes the science of lasers, as well as American literature, art, music, and history of the '60s. The decathletes also need to read Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Every year, our team competes in Southeast regional meets in December and January, and then competes at the state tournament in Anchorage in February.

Kayhi won the Alaska State championship in 2018 for the first time, defeating ten-time state champions Lathrop High School. The decathletes won 33 different individual medals (12 gold, 14 silver, and 7 bronze), and they won gold in the SuperQuiz.

Our team then went on to win the Division III (small schools) USAD national championship in April, beating out teams from Utah, Maine, and several other states. The team also received the "Rookie of the Year" award as the highest-scoring team new to the national tournament, and won second place in the Division III SuperQuiz. The decathletes won 25 individual medals at nationals (8 gold, 6 silver, and 11 bronze), earning at least one medal in all ten events of the decathlon.
