Both of my parents were public school teachers in California, where I grew up. I was inspired by my parents and many other teachers to become an educator. I completed a teacher credential program at the University of the Pacific. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Willamette University and a Master of Arts degree from The College of William and Mary. One highlight in my teaching career was to teach English in Hong Kong, China.
I was part of the original teaching staff at Tongass School. After teaching kindergarten at TSAS for thirteen years, I finally graduated to the first-second grade team! I’m looking forward to teaming with Allyson for our fifth year as the dynamic 1st-2nd duo! Class meetings are important to me, so students can learn to problem solve and build community. Giving kids opportunities to explore and develop their multiple intelligences is another important part of how I teach.
When I’m not with my school family, I enjoy spending time with Loren, my husband of thirty-six years. We love to get outdoors to hike with our two doodle dogs. We also enjoy kayaking and bird watching. At home we like to read, watch movies and soccer, and stay in touch with our grown kids. Our son Peter is a history teacher married to Kristina, a nurse educator. Our son Brendan is a career technical education teacher married to another nurse, Courtney. Our daughter Clara is a student in a College of the Performing Arts. All of us in our family love to travel and learn about the world. After nearly thirty years of teaching, I’m still passionate about being an educator and a lifelong learner. My hope for all of my students is that they become caring humans, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners! I’m grateful to be able to work with students for more than one year, so that I can get to know them and their families better. Together we can help our kids learn and grow. I’m excited to continue being part of our Tongass school family in the 2021-2022 school year!
After finishing most of my degree I traveled a bit and found my way to Ketchikan. Tourism brought me here and helped me meet my husband of 17 years during my second summer in SE. He is from Turkey and came to Ketchikan, at first, on a cruise ship. I hooked him on the dock and here we are! I have been teaching since 2008, but this is my 9th year in my own classroom. I took time off when my two older children were little then went back to work a couple of different times. This is my 7th year in a row at TSAS! My first year was back in 2008-09 teaching Kindergarten with Ms. Carol! We look forward to being together with our whole TSAS family this year and hope to see you soon! I wish you well in this 2021-2022 school year! Haus Dung King Sang!!!
