Indian Education Preschool (Pioneer Home)
Family Handbok 2020-2021
Classroom: Our classroom is rm.132 at Kayhi. We are located at the end of the first parking lot on the right when entering the Kayhi campus off Jefferson. Drive to the end of the parking lot and our entry door is off the cul-de-sac.
Schedule and Closures: We will follow the yearly district calendar for all holiday breaks, conferences and teacher workdays. This year we will have two 2.5 hour sessions. The morning session starts at 8:45 and ends at 11:15 Monday-Thursday.
The afternoon session begins at 12:45 and ends at 3:15 Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, the afternoon sessions ends at 2:15 due to early release.
Family/Teacher Conferences: During a typical year, conferences occur once in the fall and once in the spring. These conferences are for family members to meet with teachers and specialists to discuss how your child is progressing. This is also a time to discuss any ideas, questions or concerns you may have about your child or the program. Because of COVID-19, we will be having a closed campus this year and conferences may look different but communication will always be a priority.
Visiting: The number of visitors to the building will need to be very limited during this time. However, we of course welcome collaboration and communication with families! If you wish to meet with me, we will set up a time in advance.
Toys from Home: We understand that sometimes children need “transition” items from home to help them with separation at the beginning of the preschool day and that is fine. Other toys or special items should be left for Thursdays (am session) and Fridays (pm session) for Show-n-Tell. We set a time aside at Circle for everyone who wants to participate.
Breakfast/Lunch: AM Session will be provided breakfast for $1.25 or you can pack your child a breakfast.
PM Session will be provided lunch for $3.60 or you can pack your child a lunch. Paying in lump sums makes the process a little easier for the office. The office will keep track of your account and will let me know when it is low. As well, your account can be managed online at www.kgbsd.org. Please note, they do not allow charges. There is a Free/Reduced Lunch application that will come home with your child on the first day of school.
Busing: Busing is scheduled first with Ms. Penny then sent on for approval
at Houghtaling, First Student, and Central Office. CHANGES: If you have changed your physical address or have a different drop off/pickup location, please call me as soon as possible with the new information so that First Student Bus Company and Central Office can make arrangements. Please note that not all busing requests are granted. As well, changes can take up to two weeks to process. First Student will call you once they have made arrangements for your child.
Dropping-off & Picking-up your child: The classroom is located in rm. 132 at Ketchikan High School. We are located at the end of the first parking lot on the right when entering the Kayhi campus off Jefferson. Drive to the end and our entry door is off the cul-de-sac. We are going to see how the first week goes with busses, pick-up and drop-off for parents, parking, and other situations that may arise. We may need to tweak the parent drop-off and pick up times by a few minutes over the next couple weeks so stay tuned ☺.

Behavior: Our motto is “We are Safe, Respectful Learners.” If children are struggling with keeping themselves or others safe, or are not respecting others or classroom materials, we follow a very simple, easy to understand behavior policy. First, we will use redirection as a means to calm a child who is in the moment (frustrated or upset). Then we can ask the child to continue to calm themselves, if needed, in what we like to call “Australia” (a specific self-calming area with books and other calming toys). Both of these are followed up with a short discussion of expectations for the group setting. Finally, on occasion we will need to have some “time in and talk it out” (short removal with a teacher from an activity to deescalate before discussion can happen). We will contact families if your child has injured or has been injured by another child in class. If there is an ongoing issue, we will call to conference with you. As well, please let us know if your child tells you that they are having a challenging time with friends at school. This heads up will help us problem solve and better help your child to have successful friendships at school.
Illness: If your child becomes sick at school, we will call you and ask that you come get him/her within 30 minutes of being called. If your child is going to be absent for illness or any other reason, please call us and Houghtaling to let them know.
