Meet the Teacher
Ms. Sandefur was born in Portland, Oregon, and lived in the same house her whole life until she went away to college. She was ready to see more of the world! She earned her Bachelor's Degree in English and Theology from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. Then she taught English as a second language in Germany for a year. Ever since then she has loved traveling and learning about different cultures.
When she returned from Europe, she moved to Bend, Oregon, where she earned her Master's Degree in Teaching through Eastern Oregon University. She taught high school English, Speech and Debate, and Drama in the Bend-LaPine School District for eight years. Then, the travel bug bit again, and she decided to have an Alaskan adventure. She moved to Metlakatla, where she taught high school English for four years and fell in love with Southeast Alaska. She also completed the Educational Leadership program through University of Alaska Anchorage while she was in Metlakatla, and earned her administrative license.
Off on another grand adventure, she moved to Nome, where she served as the Assistant Principal of Nome-Beltz Jr./Sr. High School. She had a great time in Nome and learned a ton. She also made friends with a few of these guys:
But she missed her friends and the beauty of the Tongass Rainforest terribly. She moved back to Ketchikan in June of 2016 and is very excited to be teaching 7th and 8th grade Language Arts at Schoenbar!
Ms. Sandefur enjoys reading, hiking, kayaking, volleyball, board games, photography, baking and knitting. She hasn't owned a TV since 2005. She also loves dogs and penguins. Ms. Sandefur is very lucky because she gets to go visit her family in Bend every summer and at Christmas. Bend is a very beautiful place, but not as beautiful as our Inside Passage home!
