Ms. Deidra Nuss

Deidra Nuss is the Band Director at Ketchikan High School. Originally from Cortland Ohio, she is a graduate from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music with a BA in music education. While there, she also was a member of the honors college and graduated Suma Cum Laude with an honors degree. Other certificates she holds are a level one and two Estill Voice training. During her college experience, Deidra was invited to attend the Doumbia International Music Seminars in Vlasti Kozani Greece. Working with Maestro Svilen Simeonov, she completed a course in Orchestral Conducting.

Her main instrument in college was bassoon and she participated in many university ensembles including Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Chamber Winds, Dana Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. However, she also studied voice with Ms. Corinne Morini, a professor at YSU, and won the lead mezzo-soprano role, Katisha, in YSU’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado. In her local community in Ohio, she played in the W.D. Packard Concert Band, Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, and Greenville Symphony Orchestra. She also was a private lesson teacher at Howland High School and the Woodwind Section Coach for the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra.

In addition, during her time at YSU, she was a Teaching Assistant and Student Technician for YSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. Ms. Nuss assisted the introductory astronomy classes, assisted planetarium shows, and composed research and analyzed data. She presented some of her research on student centered learning techniques in Boulder, Colorado, at the Astronomy Society of the Pacific: Cosmos in the Classroom 2010 proceedings. Furthermore, she attended the NASA Center for Astronomy Education workshop “Improving College Introductory Astronomy Survey Course for Non-Science Majors through Active Engagement.”

In Ketchikan, Deidra has performed with the Ketchikan Community Concert Band, the Windjammers Jazz Band, and as a pit musician for the First City Players Fall Musicals. She also teaches private bassoon lessons. Currently, she is the librarian and assistant director for the Ketchikan Orchestra Project where she also plays bassoon. She is also the Music Director for First City Players musical productions and is the Secretary for the First City Players Board of Govenors.
