    Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2019!  Your kids came back rested and ready to learn.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break.

    enVision Math News

We are starting to learn how to add 3 numbers, and find the missing number.  For example:  15 = 3 + 8 + ____

This math is harder for the kids.  What works well is having them use cubes or pictures, to draw out each problem.

    Extra Credit Math –

Just a reminder:  When students finish the homework page correctly during our classroom lesson, they will not have any math homework in their folder.  If there IS a math homework page in your child’s folder, your child can earn an extra credit Dojo point if they do it at home and turn it in the next day.  Math homework is not required, but it is good practice.  J

    Cooking Fridays

We have technology classes this week and next week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Because of this, there is no time for cooking.  SO…no cooking until January 25, 2019.

I will send out a text with our January 25 cooking project, and any needed ingredients, closer to that date.  Thanks!

    Snow Gear!!

Winter weather has finally arrived.  Please remember:  students must be wearing a winter coat, and BOOTS, to play in the snow during recess.  Rain boots are fine, or snow boots.

If the kids forget to wear boots, they will play underneath the building at recess.

    Science Unit

We are SPACING OUT in first grade!  It’s time for astronomy – my favorite science unit of the year.

This week we are learning about the sun, and stars.  Next week:  earth and the moon.  Week three:  planets!  And the fourth week, we will learn about astronauts.

    NO SCHOOL MONDAY, JANUARY 21

There is no school for KCS students or staff on Monday, January 21.

100TH DAY OF SCHOOL is coming: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1

Mark the date:  first grade will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Friday, February 1, 2019.

Throughout the day, we will be doing math and reading activities with the number 100.  We will do 100 exercises in PE.  We will make a special 100-piece snack mix in the afternoon.  Parents are welcome to join us at any point during this fun day!

    Parent Conferences

Thank you, for coming in and speaking with me about your child!  I had a wonderful time sharing how well your children are doing!

If for any reason you were unable to meet with me last week, please email me at maria.neufeldt@k21schools.org or send me a Class Dojo message.  I’m happy to reschedule for an afternoon that works for you.

    Extra Credit Math –

We have been doing most of our math in the classroom.  When students finish the homework page correctly during our classroom lesson, they will not have any math homework in their folder.

    Vacation Homework

If you have a planned absence, such as a family vacation, please let me know the dates as soon as possible.  I will prepare some math and skills worksheets, to help your child make up the work that they miss.  History, science and story units will be excused for an excused vacation absence.

    PLEASE send COATS!

October is here, and with it cold winds, changing weather, and rain.  Please send your child with a coat, even if it is sunny outside. Often it can be sunny in the morning and cold by recess. Thank you!

    Cooking Fridays

Our next cooking project will be Friday, October 26, and we will be making vegetarian chili in our crock pot.  I will be serving it with cheese (for those who aren’t allergic to dairy) and Fritos.

    New History Unit

We are starting a new history unit this week, on Ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt.  We will be learning all about how life was thousands of years ago.  Pyramids, mummies, and even some fun recipes are all included in this unit.

    Pajama Day is NEXT WEEK

We do not wear our Halloween costumes to school on October 31.  Instead, we have a blast doing Pajama Day!  So next Wednesday, October 31 – your child may wear his or her pajamas, robes and/or slippers to school.  We will be having some extra fun that day.  And yes – Ms. Maria will be in her fluffy pink robe and bunny slippers!

    Calling All Halloween Costumes!

Please consider sending in your child’s Halloween costume next week on November 1, after the trick or treating is done.  I can save them with your child’s name on them, for our musical “Toys”.  Children who do not have speaking parts can wear their costume during our November 20 performance!

  • Food drive

KCS is participating in a food drive, sponsored by the LEGO Robotics Program.  LEGO Robotics will match our donations!  All food will be given to the Salvation Army.

Please consider donating some items of non-perishable food. No glass containers! Things that are great:  canned meats, soups, pasta, rice mixes, canned vegetables.  Please have your first grader bring any food donations directly to Ms. Maria, so she can keep count of the donated items!

Along with the LEGO matching donations, we are having a friendly “competition” between classrooms at KCS.  The classroom that donates the most items will be rewarded with an ice cream party!

The food drive will be going on for two weeks!!

    Core knowledge fair

Don’t forget – the annual KCS Core Knowledge Fair will be Tuesday, May 22, at 5:30 – 7:00 PM.

We are working on Topic 10:  Adding 10s and 1s.  This topic has been harder, because the math curriculum is giving your child about six different strategies. As always, once the kids “try out” each strategy, they are free to use the method that works best for them.

Math homework: All kids will have math homework this week on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday…unless they finish all of their work in class. homework is worth 1 point per day.

    HOMEWORK!!!

Homework this week will be the nightly reading log, plus math as described above.

HOMEWORK PRIZES!  Students who do their math homework and reading log for the whole week, will earn a prize box treat on Friday.

Last week these students earned a homework prize – and a positive paw:

    • Mackenzie
    • Elizabeth
    • Ian

    First Grade NEEDS:

We are out of paper napkins again.  We use several napkins each day, for snacks and lunch. If you can send in a large package of plain paper napkins, that would be great!

    Science

We have been learning about animal habitats.  The kids are really enjoying learning about the different habitats and animals in our world!

We will finish habitats this week.  Our last two lessons are on saltwater habitats, and endangered animals.

    Swimming Lessons are done!

Swimming is done for the year.  I have a request, for the parents of BOYS:  I already have several little girls’ swimsuits to loan out.  I do not have any boys’ swim trunks.

If your son has outgrown a pair of swim trunks, and you would like to donate it to my loaner box, I would really appreciate it.

    Core Knowledge Fair

Each year, KCS does a Core Knowledge Fair.  This year, our event will be 5:30 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday,

    May 22.

First grade students are required to do a project for the Core Knowledge Fair.  Projects are to be completed at home, with as much help as parents want to give.  They do not have to be elaborate – they can be as simple as a poster.

Projects should be on anything that we have learned this year:  space, animal habitats, Ancient Egypt, volcanos, etc.  Parents can request to borrow a 1st grade Core Knowledge book, for more project ideas.

This week we are learning about using addition to solve subtraction. It is an extension of the “fact family” lesson.  We are using cubes, and “part, part, whole” mats to solve subtraction problems.

Math homework: If students need more practice on the lesson for the day, I will send home the regular lesson homework page.  If they really didn’t get it, I will send home a “Reteach” worksheet.  If they really GOT it, I will send home an enrichment worksheet, that lets them expand their learning.  All kids will have 1 page of math homework, Monday – Wednesday. All homework is worth 1 point per day.

Also new:  the last ½ hour of the day will be dedicated to math for ALL students.  Some are in math groups. Some will be with me, doing advanced math concepts.

    HOMEWORK!!!

Homework this week will be the nightly reading log, plus math as described above.

We are in our third math topic, adding and subtracting to twenty. This topic explores strategies that take first graders beyond counting on their fingers…since we do not have twenty fingers.

If you have any questions on what your child is doing in math, please send me a Class Dojo note.  Thanks!

    HOMEWORK!!!

Homework this week will be the nightly reading log, plus whatever math is not finished in class.

We do the first 4 pages of every math lesson in class together.  If those pages in your child’s math packet are not complete, your child either was absent, or they did not copy the problems off of the board during math class.

Students have 10-20 minutes to work on the last two pages, the homework pages, in class.  Most of the time, there are a few math problems left for homework, that parents can help their child work on.

Please check your child’s homework folder each evening, Monday through Thursday.  There is always a 10-minute reading log, and there will usually be a bit of math to look at.

Reading log and math homework are 1 point each in the gradebook, each day.

    Positive Paws!

These first graders earned positive paws last week, for getting all of their work done in an exciting holiday week:

    • Vela
    • Mackenzie
    • Elizabeth

    Field TRIP!!!

First grade is going to the Ketchikan Fire Station, downtown, next Wednesday, December 6.  We will ride the bus with the TSAS first graders.  The bus leaves KCS at 12:00 PM, and will return by 2:15 PM.

All students are being given a coat and boots, and we will take a tour of the fire station.

Parent volunteers are more than welcome to come and help us! Just meet us at the fire station, about 12:15 PM. (There is no room on the bus for parent helpers, since we are sharing the bus with TSAS.)

    Cooking Projects

There will be no cooking project this week, as Miss Maria will be out on Friday.

    December Service Projects

Please check your child’s folder daily for math homework.

The kids are at the point where we can work through four pages in math class each morning, plus have about 10 minutes for homework problems.

The last 2 pages in each day’s packet are for homework, about 4-6 problems each lesson.  If your child didn’t finish their homework pages in class, the packet will be in their homework folder.

    History Unit – Ancient Civilizations

We are learning about Ancient Aztecs this week. Next week, we will learn about Incas.

Starting December 5, we will be doing a unit on the history of world religions. We will read a story, watch a movie, and do a craft for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

We are only learning about the history of these religions. I encourage the kids to be respectful, and talk about their family’s personal beliefs at home. J

    SNOW GEAR!

Please remember to send your child to school with boots, a coat and snow pants on days that we have snow.  Without this gear, they will not be able to play in the snow at recess.

    PAW-sitive Paws!

These first graders earned positive paws last week for having 100% positive Class Dojo points all week:

    • Axe
    • Bentley
    • Ian
    • Mackenzie

    Thanksgiving Holiday

There will be no school this Wednesday, Thursday or Friday,

    for the Thanksgiving holiday:

    November 22-24, 2017.

    Cooking Projects

I am changing how first graders will earn their cooking projects.  Each week, the class will need to earn 400 green (positive) Class Dojo points by Thursday.  We also need to have less than 20 red (negative) Class Dojo points.

If we make our weekly goal, we will do a cooking project on Fridays.  I will send out a Class Dojo message each Thursday afternoon, to say if we earned a project for the week.

Changing this dynamic makes our cooking projects a positive reward for working hard and behaving in school.

    December Service Project

For December, we are doing a used children’s book drive for WISH.  Send in your gently used children’s books, and we will collect and deliver them to Wish before Christmas.
