Houghtaling Elementary School

Educating and empowering students to be leaders, critical thinkers, and problem solvers.

    Dear Houghtaling Families,

Due to the increased levels of Covid-19 in the community and our school, Houghtaling’s risk level is rising to High. This means our school, including the preschool annex, will be closed effective tomorrow and students will shift to at-home learning. The school will be closed to students for the rest of this week. Towards the end of the week, we will reassess and consider re-opening Monday after consulting with district staff and officials from Ketchikan EOC and Public Health.

During the closure for this week, students will be doing common school-wide assignments based on their grade level. Those activities, created by a team of Houghtaling teachers, will be emailed out to parents and posted on our school website. Our student’s classroom teachers will also be reaching out, and will be available to assist and answer questions as students continue their learning. Due to the hoped-for shortness of this closure, laptops will not be sent home at this time.

If your child lacks the necessary materials to complete these assignments (A journal, pencils, and something to color with such as crayons or markers), family members can come to the Houghtaling main office to receive supplies.

I encourage all families to follow the governor’s and State of Alaska’s advice and continue wearing masks in public, avoid large groups of people, and self-isolate and test if you have been in contact with someone infected or are showing Covid-like symptoms. Actions such as these will help improve the conditions in our community and help our scholars return to on-site learning.

If you have any questions, you can contact us at the school at 907-225-4128.

    To your child’s Success!

    Michael Cron,  Principal
