  • TEST-TO-STAY PROGRAM

    In an effort to help unvaccinated staff and students not have to quarantine as close contacts, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District (KGBSD) is implementing an Opt-In “Test-to-Stay” program for staff and students who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  Using rapid antigen tests, staff and students who are not fully vaccinated, and who are identified as “close contacts” due to exposure to someone with COVID-19, will be given the option to continue working at/attending school during their quarantine period.  Details:

    • Background - Protocols up until this point: Non-vaccinated close contacts, once identified, had to leave school and complete one of the following quarantine options:
      • No-Testing Option: Quarantine for 10 days, return to school on day 11;
      • Testing Option: Quarantine for 7 days, test negative on a COVID-19 PCR test on or after day 7, return to school on day 8.
      • These quarantine windows begin the day after the last known exposure to the positive case.
    • Beginning Wednesday, December 8th: Non-vaccinated close contacts, once identified, will have these options:
      • Test-to-Stay: Remain at school, and opt in* for the “Test-to-Stay” protocol;
      • Quarantine & Test: Quarantine for 7 days, test negative on a COVID-19 PCR test on or after day 7, return to school on day 8;
      • Quarantine Only: Quarantine for 10 days, return to school on day 11.
    • School Plans: Each school building has its own testing capacity and staffing; please click on the links below to read about how the Test-to-Stay program will work at each school:

    Parents/guardians who wish to opt their children into the Test-to-Stay program must complete a Parent/Guardian Authorization for Student COVID Screening form and turn that form in to the children’s school(s), or complete the online form.

    For more information, you can contact Principal Nick Higson at (907) 228-2200
